Mitchell Falls to Conn College in Home Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team suffered a 70-42 setback in its home opener against Connecticut College on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Kayleen Murray posted a game-high 14 points and added five rebounds to lead the Camels (2-3 overall). Caitlin Cimino chipped in with 12 points while Tara Gabelman recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards. Conn College shot 38 percent from the field and dominated the glass by a 59-41 margin.

Freshman Diamond Thomas led Mitchell (0-4 overall) with nine points and also pulled down six rebounds. Classmates Amanda Garcia and Lauren Lohmar each added eight points while junior Kate Mulloy posted six points and 10 rebounds. The Mariners shot just 21 percent for the contest.

Conn College opened up a 10-3 lead in the early going and never trailed in the contest. The Camels extended the margin to double digits on a lay-up by Annie Fierberg with 13:18 remaining, and by the six-minute mark the lead had grown to 21. Cimino paced Conn College with 10 points in the stanza.

Mitchell struggled to find its rhythm from the start. Freshman Caroline Long connected on the team's first shot attempt of the game, but the Mariners missed their next 13 attempts and went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal. Mitchell shot only 12 percent for the half and trailed 36-12 at the break.

Conn College rolled through the second half and pumped the lead to as many as 33 points. The Camels had 10 players record a field goal in the contest and handed out 20 assists on 28 baskets. 

Mitchell will next play St. Joseph's College (Long Island) at the Wesleyan Courtyard by Marriott Tournament on Friday, November 30 at 8 p.m.
