Lady Bulldogs Win Home and MIAA Opener

ADRIAN, Mich. – The women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak to start the season on Wednesday night with a 66-58 win over visiting Saint Mary's College (2-4, 0-1) in the home and MIAA opener for the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-0).

Adrian used a 16-0 run late in the first half to turn a 14-13 deficit into a 29-14 lead with 2:35 left in the opening half. Six different players scored for Adrian during the game-changing run and Antoinea McElroy scored seven of the last nine points for the Bulldogs.

Adrian limited the Belles to 17 first-half points including just four points in the paint. Saint Mary's shot 32 percent and went to the foul line just once in the first 20 minutes. They also committed 14 turnovers which Adrian turned into 15 points.

The Bulldogs built their biggest lead of the game at 45-29 with 15:16 left in the contest, but that is when the Belles began to fight back. Saint Mary's cut the lead to four twice in the final 5:37 at 54-50 and 56-52. Adrian held off the late charge as Raven Anderson took over on the offensive end. She hit a basket with 2:54 left to increase the lead to six and added another jumper with 1:31 left to give AC a 60-52 lead. Anderson scored six points in a span of 1:53 and then Amy Van Gessel clinched it with four straight free throws with under 39 seconds to go.

Van Gessel led the Bulldogs with 13 points and finished 5-of-6 at the line. The rest of the Bulldogs combined to go 4-of-17 at the charity stripe. Anderson added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench. She grabbed three rebounds and recorded three steals in 17 minutes. LaQwana Dockery chipped in nine points and four rebounds in 25 minutes. McElroy added eight points and seven boards as the Adrian bench outscored the Belles' reserves, 28-12.
