Belton, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team could not battle all the way back from a seven-point halftime deficit as the Cru dropped a 68-66 heartbreaker to Trinity University Wednesday night in Belton. The loss drops the UMHB women to 1-3 on the season. The Tigers improve to 2-1 on the year with the victory.
The Cru opened the game with a 9-2 run and led by as many as eight in the first half before Trinity fought back to take a 30-26 halftime lead. UMHB cut the lead to 52-50 on Macy Moore's lay-up with 6:50 remaining, but the Tigers scored the next five points to push it to 57-50 just 27 seconds later. The Cru would pull to within three with 32 seconds left. Anecia Richardson hit a bucket for Trinity to make it 68-63 Tigers with 24 seconds left. Tori Tucker hit a three-pointer with six seconds to play, but the Cru was unable to get a foul as time ran out.
Taylor Tucker led UMHB with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Kortney Bevers added 12 points. Ten different players scored for the Cru, but UMHB turned the ball over 28 times and shot just 39 percent from the field. The Cru won the rebounding battle 53-32.
Richardson led the way for the Tigers with 23 points. Hannah Coley added 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and seven steals before fouling out late in the game. Murphy Burns also had 11 points for Trinity. The Tigers shot 44 percent from the field in the game.
The Cru women will continue their home stand with the American Southwest Conference opener on Saturday. UMHB will host LeTourneau University for a 5:00 PM tip-off in the opener of a women's-men's doubleheader at the Mayborn Campus Center.
