SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern women's basketball was held scoreless in the final 4:30 as Hardin-Simmons stole a 63-62 win from the Pirates.
Valerie Logan's three kicked off the game for Southwestern and closed out the first half, sending SU into the locker room up five, 39-34.
Behind Logan's offense, Southwestern was able to hang onto the lead through the midway point of the second half, but HSU tied the game from the free throw line with 9:16 to play. The game remained tight throughout the remainder of the game and the Cowgirls turned up the defensive pressure and kept the Pirates from scoring after Jordan Owens' layup with 4:36 remaining.
Owens led offensively with 19 points while Logan added in a season-high 14 going 4-5 from teh field and 4-4 from three point range. Chelsea Leeder posted 12 points and is three three-pointers shy of setting the SU career record. Southwestern shot just 46.7% (7-15) from the free throw line in the contest while Hardin-Simmons converted on 76.5% (13-17). Owens also led all rebounders with eight boards. HSU's Alexis Popelar led all scorers with 20 points.
The loss drops the Pirates to 3-2 on the season. They open SCAC conference action on Friday evening, facing Austin College in Sherman at 6 p.m.
