Baruch Defeats Johns Hopkins (62-60) to Win Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament in Baltimore

The Baruch College Bearcats won their second consecutive game by two points after defeating the Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins University, 62-60, in the championship game of the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md.

The visiting Bearcats (2-0) struggled from the field shooting only 33 percent (21-63), but used their defensive pressure to score 29 points off of 28 turnovers by their opponent to record the victory.

Johns Hopkins led throughout the first part of the game and entered halftime leading by three points (31-28). They began the second half by building their biggest lead of seven points (37-30) with 17:05 left.

However, the Bearcats rallied and managed to take a five point lead (48-43) on a jumper by
Francess Henry with 10:16 remaining.

The Blue Jays tied the game as the final minutes were dominated by both teams shooting numerous free throws.

The Blue Jays led 59-58 on a pair of free throws by Alex Vassila with 1:36 left, but the Bearcats quickly went back up by one point (60-59) after
Iyana Abrams connected on two free throws at 1:15.

Sheridan Taylor stole a pass to give the Bearcats back the possession and Henry was fouled as the team prepared to run a play. Henry connected on both free throws for the three point lead (62-59) with 43 seconds left.

The Blue Jays returned to the free throw line with 18 seconds left, but Karalea Follmer connected on her first and missed the second. They managed to grab the offensive rebound off the missed free throw and had three shot opportunities in the final 10 seconds, but could not score to enable the Bearcats to walk off with the exciting two point victory.

Jessica Duleba, named MVP of the tournament, led all scorers this afternoon with 19 points and four steals. Abrams had a solid all-around game with 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Henry finished with nine points, five steals and two assists. Taylor had eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

also struggled from the field shooting 34.4 percent (21-61). Vassila led their scorers with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The women's basketball team will enjoy a brief break and return to action on Tuesday, November 27, with a 5:00 pm CUNYAC contest at rival Hunter College.
