WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Williams College used a sizeable height advantage to block 14 University of New England shot attempts on its way to a 55-49 win in the final game of the 2012 Williams College Tip-Off Tournament Sunday (Nov. 18) afternoon at Chandler Gymnasium.

Williams, ranked 23rd in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, improves to 2-0 after its win Saturday over Salve Regina University. The Nor'easters, who rallied past Wellesley College a day earlier, now stands at 1-1.

Six-foot-three forward Claire Baecher finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and six blocks on her way to winning tournament MVP honors for the Ephs. Grace Rehnquist came off the bench to pour in a game-high 19 points, including four shots from beyond the arc. Danny Rainer was strong inside with eight boards and seven blocks.

For UNE, sophomore Kelly Coleman had a team-best 13 points to go with eight rebounds. All-tournament selection Beth Suggs contributed eight points and 11 caroms, while first-year guard Michaela Flanagan had 11 points in a reserve role. First-year guard Alanna Vose had seven of her nine points in the second half.

After a trey by Vose tied the score at 42 with just under six minutes remaining, Rehnquist made 1 of 2 free throws to give the Ephs the lead for good. Williams would hold the Nor'easters scoreless over the next two minutes to take a five-point lead (47-42). Baecher had a couple of buckets in the paint to build the advantage.

UNE refused to give ground from that point and eventually pulled within two (49-47) on a layup by Suggs with 1:07 on the clock.

Williams missed its initial shot attempt on its next possession, but Jen Borderud was able to come up with a critical offensive rebound to provide the Ephs with possession again. From there, Williams made 6 of 6 free throw attempts -- including four by Jennie Harding -- over the final 30 seconds to preserve the victory.

In addition to their 14 rejections, the Ephs utilized their strong presence inside to limit UNE to 26.9 percent (18 of 67) shooting and take a 44-33 advantage on the glass.

The Nor'easters were able to force 18 Williams turnovers, while committing just nine miscues of their own.

UNE returns to action Tuesday (Nov. 21) when national power Bowdoin College comes to the Harold Alfond Forum for a 5:30 p.m. start. That game can be seen live at http://athletics.une.edu/showcase
