Hayley Kanner scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds as nationally ranked No. 16 Tufts University downed Hamilton College 46-38 at the 35th annual Skidmore College Invitational at Skidmore's Williamson Center on Nov. 17.
Hannah Foley scored nine points for the Jumbos. Maggie Riddle corralled a game-high 12 rebounds and Bre Dufault and Caitlin McClure chipped in nine and eight, respectively. Tufts boasted a 46-33 rebounding advantage. Dufault led the defense with three steals.
Eliza Howe '13 earned a spot on the all-tournament team after averaging 18.5 points in two games for Hamilton. Howe scored a game-high 14 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Dani Feigin '14 scored 11 points on the strength of three 3-pointers. Madie Harlem '13 contributed seven points and eight rebounds.
Howe reached double figures in the first half by scoring 10 of Hamilton's first 19 points, and the Continentals led 19-18 with just over three minutes to play. Tied at 21-21 with under a minute to go, Alli Rocchi converted a layup, and Kelsey Morehead hit two free throws to give Tufts a 25-21 halftime lead.
The Jumbos (2-0 overall) opened the second half with a 7-2 run for a 32-23 cushion. Feigin hit a three to cut Hamilton's deficit to 32-26 with 13 minutes remaining. Tufts answered with a layup by Kanner, and the Continentals didn't get closer than seven points the rest of the afternoon.
Both teams struggled with their shooting. Hamilton shot 17.2 percent in the second half and finished the game at 23 percent (12-52). The Jumbos were just 1-for-11 from 3-point range and committed 22 turnovers.
Hamilton (0-2) plays its home opener against SUNY Oswego in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 20. Tufts travels to Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday.
