DECATUR, Ill – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team kicked off the 2012-13 season Friday evening with a 65-50 win over Millikin University in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. at the Griswold Center.

The Pointers took a 44-27 lead into halftime, shooting 53-percent (17-32) from the floor.

Preseason All-American pick Sam Barber (Schofield, WI/D.C. Everest/Winona St.) led all scorers with 27 points shooting  9-for-13 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.

Elsewhere for the Pointers, Myranda Tyler (Grafton, WI/Grafton) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds while Brooke Allen (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) tallied seven points in the victory.  All 16 Pointer saw playing time in the contest.

Williams led the way for the Big Blue, recording 10 points and seven rebounds.

UWSP held Millikin to just 3-of-19 from three-point range (.158) and 18-of-59 (.305) from the floor for the game.

UW-Stevens Point (1-0) returns to action Saturday when it faces No.1-ranked Calvin College, 78-72 winners of their opening-round match-up with No. 3 St.Thomas, in day two of the tournament. Action is set for 4 p.m.
