Long Leads No. 14 Saints to a 72-56 Win Over Maryville (Tenn.)

(DANVILLE, Ky.) - Senior guard Allison Long (Hebron, Ky./Conner) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the 14th-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 72-56 win over Maryville (Tenn.) College today (Saturday, November 17, 2012) on the second day of the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic hosted by Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 2-0 overall and with the loss, the Scots fall to 1-1.

Thomas More jumped out to a 9-0 lead with 18:28 to play in the first half when sophomore forward Jenny Burgoyne (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) made a lay-up.  Maryville answered with a 15-7 run capped by an Alex Bond lay-up to cut the lead to 16-15 with 10:01 to play in the opening half.  The Saints responded with a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 23-15 with 7:31 to play in the first half when Long made a three-pointer.  The Scots used an 8-1 to take cut the lead to 24-23 on two free-throws by Lailah Farmer with 2:40 to play in the opening half.  Thomas More closed out the half on a 10-3 run to take a 34-26 lead into intermission when freshman guard Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) made a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Maryville opened the second half on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 36-36 when Lauren Burnett made a three-pointer with 17:28 to play in the game.  Thomas More came right back with a 16-2 run capped by a Long three-pointer with 10:29 to play in the game to extend the lead to 52-38.  The Scots answered with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 52-43 with 9:28 to play in the second half when Kiera Payne converted an old fashion three-point play.  Undaunted the Saints responded with a 9-0 to increase the lead to 61-43 with 6:29 to play in the game when Long made one-of-two free-throws.  The Scots cut the lead to 68-56 with 1:15 to play in the game, but that would be as close as they would come as the Saints went on to the 72-56 victory.

Thomas More as a team shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field, including 60.0 percent (nine-of-15) from behind the three-point arc.  Joining Long in double-figure scoring was Burgoyne with 15 points, while junior guard Devin Beasley (Burlington, Ky./Conner) just missed double-figures with seven points.  Burgoyne led the Saints on the boards with seven rebounds, while junior guard Nakharra Gaines (Fairdale, Ky./Fairdale) added six rebounds.  Long led the team in assists with six. 

Thomas More returns to action on Tuesday (November 20) when it hosts Centre College in its home opener.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
