ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's basketball team shook off an abysmal opening half with a dominant second, surging past the Gettysburg College Bullets (0-1) for a season-opening victory at the Marymount Tip-Off Tournament. The big second stanza saw the Captains nearly outscore the Bullets entire offensive effort, as Camry Green led the Captains to a 56-46 win Friday night.

Green posted career highs in both scoring and rebounding as she paced the Captains attack, scoring 18 points with 17 rebounds in the game. CNU scored 45 points in the second 20 minutes of action, erasing a ten-point halftime deficit and pulling out a ten-point win.

Christopher Newport struggled to get going in the first half, shooting just 17.9% on 5-of-28 shooting from the floor. The Captains first made basket did not register until the 11:48 mark in the first half, when Green ended the drought with an offensive rebound and putback.

On the other side of the ball, though, the Captains kept up the pressure defense and Gettysburg was only able to build the lead to nine when Katie Earley converted a three-point play the next time down the floor for an 11-2 lead. Though the shots continued to bounce off the rim, CNU fought through the struggles to finish with 11 points in the half, trailing just 21-11.

The Captains shook off the rough opening right out of the gates in the second half. A 10-1 run to open the half got CNU right back into the game, trailing 22-21. Tia Perry, last season's leading scorer, notched four points in the run after being held scoreless in the first. Green finished off the comeback on another putback with 14:34 remaining in the game, tying the game at 23.

On the very next possession, rookie Brandi Holland gave the Captains their first lead of the night with a long three-pointer from the right wing. With the lead in hand, CNU would not look back, never giving up the lead. Rookie Jordan Miller hit a pair of three's and Green added a pair of traditional three-point plays over the next seven minutes to lead CNU to a nine-point edge, 44-35 with under eight minutes to play.

A jumper in the paint from Tia Perry would give the Captains the biggest lead of the night, an 11-point edge at 48-37, and the Captains would hold on from there.

CNU missed just 12 shots in the second half, shooting an impressive 53.8% to finish the night at a 35.2% clip (19-54). Gettysburg struggled from the floor in the second half, hitting just 24% to drop to 29.4% (15-51) on the night.

Green's performance led the way, adding a pair of steals and one assist to her career-high night scoring and rebounding. Perry finished with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.

The Bullets got double figures from Caroline Murphy and Jessica Porter, with Murphy posting a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds.

CNU will now advance to play in Saturday's championship game of the Marymount Tip-Off Invitational, at 7:30 pm. They will play the winner of the Bridgewater/Marymount game being played Friday night.
