Women's Hoops Falls to Millsaps in SCAC Tournament

More news about: Trinity (Texas)

Homewood, Alabama - Trinity's women's basketball team hung tough through most of Friday night's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament game, but Millsaps pulled ahead in the end to earn a 65-55 win.

Trinity fell to 9-17 this season with the loss, which was the second time the Tigers were beaten by the Majors this year.  Millsaps won 71-57 in San Antonio at the end of January.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, and the two teams were tied 25-25 at the break.  The Tigers actually jumped out to an 18-7 lead to start the game, but Millsaps rallied with 11 unanswered points to tie it with 3:55 left until the half.  Trinity never trailed in the opening period, and two Millsaps free throws in the final minute evened the game for just the second time all night.

Millsaps took its first lead early in the second half, scoring two more free throws to go up 29-28.  The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes, and Trinity led 38-37 with 14:03 to play in the game.  That was the last lead the Tigers would see, though, as Millsaps pulled ahead for good on its next possession.

In the final minutes, the Majors turned a three-point lead (54-51) into a 10-point margin with seven straight points, taking control of the game down the stretch.  The Tigers hit just 1-5 free throws and 2-10 from the field in the final 4:02 of the game.

Murphy Burns led Trinity with 22 points, hitting 8-20 from the field and 4-10 from three-point range.  She also picked up five rebounds in her 38 minutes of action.

Hannah Coley added 17 points on 6-14 shooting, nailing an impressive 4-8 from beyond the arc.  Coley also tied for the team lead with six rebounds, collected five steals, and handed out four assists.  Libby Kruse tied Coley with a team-best six rebounds to go with four points and three assists.

Shante Morton led Millsaps with an impressive double-double.  Morton scored a game-high 23 points, and grabbed 16 rebounds.  Janice Okeke led all players with an equally impressive 21 rebounds, also scoring eight points, and recording four steals.

Trinity is elminated from the SCAC Tournament, and Millsaps moves on to face Southwestern in tomorrow's SCAC Semifinals.
