Sophs lead Tommies back to MIAC playoff finals

Sophomore forward Taylor Young collected 21 points and nine rebounds as the No. 13-ranked Tommies (25-1) pushed their winning streak to 25 with Thursday night's 58-45 victory over St. Mary's (14-13) in an MIAC women's basketball semifinal-round play at Schoenecker Arena.

Sophomore Maggie Weiers had 10 of her 14 points in the second half and added seven rebounds for UST, which never trailed.

The Tommies led 30-21 at halftime, and the Cards never get closer than seven in the final 20:00. Kellie Ring sank a 3-point basket with 3:07 to go to start a game-closing 11-5 run.

Jessica Thone had 16 points, Jamie Stefely added 13 points and Courtney Euerle added 11 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Cardinals, who were playing their third road game in six days.

St. Thomas, which improved to 12-0 at home this season, had a 41-28 rebounding advantage and made 16-of-18 free throws. That offset 36-percent shooting from the floor.

It was the 18th time in their 25-game win streak that the Tommies held their opponent to less than 55 points,

The top-seeded Tommies play No. 2-seed Gustavus Saturday at home at 3 p.m. in the playoff championship game.
