Junior center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) was selected as the ECAC Division III – New England Player of the Week early Tuesday evening, moments before Newbury's 89-59 victory over Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Quarterfinal.
The announcement comes a day after the South Shore native was named the NECC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season as well as to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Honor Roll for the third time.
It marks the second time this season, and in her career, she earned the regional honors while making it the second time this year she nearly swept the four major conference, regional and national awards. Earlier this season, she collected the NECC Player of the Week, NEWBA Honor Roll and national D3Hoops honors all in the same week.
Last week, O'Connell averaged 17.5 points and 19.5 rebounds per game to guide the Nighthawks to a 2-0 week which included a the school's first victory over Daniel Webster. Against the Eagles, she scored the game winner netting a game-high 25 points while ripping down 23 boards in a 60-59 victory. She closed out the week by collected her 19th double-double of the season, tallying 10 points and 16 rebounds.
