Yellowjacket Rally Falls Just Short in 67-62 Loss at CMU

PITTSBURGH – Emily Peel and Jacquie Shaw combined for 37 points and 15 rebounds as Carnegie Mellon upended the University of Rochester, 67-62, in women's basketball at Skibo Gym on Sunday afternoon. 

Peel scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked five shots for CMU (9-15, 3-10 University Athletic Association). Shaw added 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. 

Jodie Luther led Rochester with 21 points and seven rebounds. Michelle Ketcham and Danielle McNabb had 10 points apiece. Rochester is 19-5 overall, 8-5 UAA. The Yellowjackets were ranked No. 11 by D3hoops.com and No. 12 by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association  in the February 14 polls.

CMU led by five at the half (36-31) and stretched its advantage to nine points, 52-43, after Shaw scored on a give-and-go layup. With the Tartans ahead,  54-45 and 8:24 left, the Yellowjackets got a jumper off the left block by Luther and a bank shot just outside the lane from Kristyn Wright. That cut the deficit to five, 54-49, with 7:35 remaining.

Carnegie answered with a 9-0 run in just over two minutes: Shaw made two layups, Aspen McKeever drove for a layup, then knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key. The burst put CMU in front, 63-49, with just over five minutes to play.

Rochester scored nine straight – a layup and short jumper by Luther, a 16 footer off the right baseline by Ally Zywicki, and a three-pointer from the top of the key by Zywicki. That got the Yellowjackets within 63-58, at 1:47.

Chandler Caulfield made both ends of a one-and-one for CMU but Luther's layup kept it at 65-60 with :46.1 on the clock. The Tartans missed a one-and-one, then two more free throws in a two-shot situation. Luther made a layup with 15.5 seconds left, bringing Rochester within 65-62. Shaw sank two clinching free throws with just over 13 seconds to play. 

Rochester hit 28 of 72 from the field (38.9%), four of 17 outside the arc (23.5%) and two of three free throw attempts (66.7%). CMU was 26 of 54 from the field (48.1%), three of 12 outside the arc (25%), and 12 of 18 from the line (66.7%). 

The Yellowjackets close out the regular season at the Palestra on Saturday afternoon against Emory University at 2 pm. Both teams are 8-5 in the UAA. Emory lost at Case Reserve, 77-60. It will be Senior Day on the River Campus. Four members of the Class of 2012 will be honored in pre-game ceremonies: Luther, Ketcham, Madeline Korber, and Kate Agan.
