Captains Win at Shenandoah, 68-52

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Three Captains finished in double figures as Christopher Newport University (19-5, 14-3) won in their final conference trip to Shingleton Gymnasium. CNU beat Shenandoah University (9-15, 6-11), who will join the Old Dominion Athletic Conference starting in the 2012-13 season.

Sophomore Tia Perry scored 18 points, senior Jerlisa Bowser had 16 and rookie Camry Green poured in 15 points to lead the Captains offensive effort.

The Captains surged out to a big lead early, pulling ahead by 13 with 10:37 to go in the first half. CNU took a 23-10 lead on a pair of free-throws by Kelly Halverson. Bowser hit a pair of three's and Perry had seven points in the early run.

Sam Akers scored the next 10 points for the Hornets in just two minutes of game time to pull back within five. Akers hit a three with 8:43 remaining to make it 25-20 after the 10-2 run.

Another triple from Bowser stopped the run and ignited the Captains offense to close out the half leading 39-32. The senior guard led the way in the first 20 minutes, pouring in 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting including 4-for-5 from three-point land. Akers had 16 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting to keep Shenandoah tight at the break.

The two teams traded baskets through the first ten minutes of the second stanza before the Captains built the lead back to double-figures with 11:16 remaining. Green knocked down a layup off an assist from Andrea Hobbs and was fouled. She hit the free-throw for the traditional three-point play, making it 56-44 in favor of the Captains.

The shot was part of a 16-4 run late in the second half that gave CNU a game-high 18 point lead with 3:29 remaining. CNU finished out the game shooting 42.9% (24-56) while holding Shenandoah to 32.1% (18-56) from the field.

Perry paired her 18 points with nine rebounds and two assists, while Bowser tied her season-high with 16 points, adding three rebounds and four assists. Senior Lauren Gural had nine rebounds, tying for a team-high with Green, who added 15 points.

Akers had a game-high 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting for the Hornets, while Holly Chittenden grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Captains return home for the regular season finale on Saturday, February 18. The game is part of the Play 4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Initiative and is also Senior Night in the Freeman Center. Tip is set for 2:00 pm.
