OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State women's basketball team established a 15-point lead late in the first half, but Geneseo (14-9, 9-7 SUNYAC) charged back in the second half to hand the Lakers (11-12, 6-10 SUNYAC) a 67-52 loss Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Junior Kassie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y.) broke out for a career-high 17 points behind 4-for-6 shooting from downtown to lead all scorers.
Trailing by two early in the contest, Lauren Nunizato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to trigger a 21-4 run for Oswego State during a ten-minute span that saw Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) score eight of her 15 points to give the Lakers a 26-11 lead. However, the Blue Knights clawed back into the game over the final six minutes of the half to head into the locker room trailing 29-24.
Geneseo carried its momentum into the second half as an old-fashioned three-point play by Box Reinhardt sparked a 10-run capped off by a Bri Dunton layup that put the Blue Knights ahead 45-38. Later in the frame, a jumper from Paula Egelston (So., Fultonville, N.Y.) made it a two-point game in favor of Geneseo, but the Blue Knights scored nine of the next ten points to regain a double-digit margin to earn the win.
Geneseo was the beneficiary of balanced scoring as Bri Dunton and Melissa Graham contributed 12 points each followed by 11 points from Katelyn Charbonneau and Shannon McGinnis, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. Besides Kleine and Ryan, no other Laker scored more than six points.
Oswego State forced 20 turnovers, but was out-rebounded 50-24 in the loss.
The loss combined with other results from around the conference assures that Oswego State will be seeded as high as sixth in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs.
