PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. - The Rosemont College women's basketball team (12-12, 5-10 CSAC) survived a spirited challenge on the road against the Patriots of Valley Forge Christian (12-15) this evening in a non-conference game, winning by a final score of 61-55. For the Ravens it was their fourth win in their last five games and the first time they've reached 12 wins in a season since 2004-2005.
The Ravens controlled the lead for most of the first half, but Rosemont could not pull away from the Patriots as the period featured four tie scores. A layup by Liz Coyne (Fr./Downingtown West/West Chester, Pa.) with 8:42 left in the half gave the Ravens their largest lead at the time at 24-16. Rosemont headed into the locker room leading by four points, 34-30.
Five minutes into the deciding half the Pats took a 41-39 lead, but that lead was short-lived as the Ravens put together a 9-0 run to take a 48-41 lead with 8:24 left, denying the Patriots a field goal for almost seven minutes of elapsed time. VFCC continued to work at the Raven lead and it appeared that the Pats were putting together the seeds of a comeback late in the second half. With 2:22 left and the Ravens leading by four points, Rosemont missed two shots but Vanessa Johnson (Sr./G.W. Carver/Philadelphia) reeled in two critical offensive rebounds to keep control of the ball until the Raven's third shot during the key possession was converted by Coyne to make the Raven's lead a more comfortable six points with only 1:08 remaining.
Coyne scored a career-high 34 points on 14-for-25 shooting, including 6-for-6 from the foul line. She was also a force in the paint, earning her 11th double-double of the season with her 10 rebounds. Ashley Montecchio (Jr./Sun Valley/Aston, Pa.) also scored in double-figures for the Ravens with 13 points. Johnson continued her strong rebounding numbers, leading the Ravens with 12 caroms.
Amanda Reich scored 21 and Morgan Godwin had 13 to lead the Patriots. Amanda Compton had 12 rebounds for the home side.
The Raven's last game of the season is a CSAC game on Wednesday, 2/15 as the team travels to Langhorne, Pa. to play the Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical University in a game scheduled for 7:00pm.
