THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A 65-47 Thursday night home win over Whittier secured Cal Lutheran's spot as one of four teams that will play in the SCIAC Women's Basketball Post-Season Tournament. The Regals never trailed and Chelsey Hastigan made her first five 3-point attempts while scoring a game-high 19 points.
Box Score: CLU 65, WC 47 - F
Hastigan's hot start and solid team defense were the key components to an 18-4 lead just over seven minutes into the first half. The Regals led by as many as 15 points before a late Poets scoring run cut the deficit to four with under two minutes left in the opening period.
Cal Lutheran took control in the second half maintaining at minimum a six-point cushion throughout the final 20 minutes. The Regals controlled the boards earning a 24-15 advantage on the glass, including nine offensive rebounds.
The Regals outside shooting went cold in the second half, but the offense managed to score 12 points in the paint and 10 more at the foul line. Rachel Heagy scored eight of her career-high 12 points in the second half and created matchup problems for the Poets defense during her 14 minutes of floor time.
Jazmyne Porter had another solid game against Whittier scoring nine points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor. She led the Regals against the Poets with 19 points in their original meeting back on Jan. 7.
As a team Cal Lutheran went 14-for-14 at the free throw line, highlighted by a 10-for-10 second half performance. Hastigan and Cameron Jones were the major contributors knocking down four apiece.
The SCIAC Tournament field is set following Thursday night's results despite three games being left on the regular season schedule. Occidental, Redlands, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and Cal Lutheran will play for seeding and the regular season conference crown.
