POTSDAM, NY (February 10, 2012) – Sophomore guard Cydni Matsuoka scored 24 points as the Vassar College women's basketball team built a 16-point halftime lead but had to hold off a late Clarkson run to defeat the Golden Knights 67-55 in Liberty League action Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Brewers, who swept the series from Clarkson for the first time since the 2000-01 season, shot a torrid 68 percent from the field (60 percent from 3-point distance) in the first half. Vassar held a comfortable 60-41 lead with 11:49 to play in the second half following a jumper from freshman forward Colleen O'Connell. But the Brewers went cold from the field, missing their next seven shots and didn't score another field goal for the next 9:34. During that time, Clarkson cut the lead to 61-53 after senior guard Casey Turner drained a jumper with 4:22 remaining. However, the hosts went cold themselves and managed only two late free throws, enabling Vassar to close out the game.

The win improves Vassar to 13-8 and 7-5 in the Liberty League. Clarkson, which lost its sixth straight game, drops to 7-14, 2-11. The Brewers will travel to St. Lawrence for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday, while Clarkson hosts Bard tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

With Matsuoka going 4-for-4 from 3-point distance in the early stages of the first half, Vassar jettisoned to an 18-8 lead and within the first six minutes of the game and over another six minute stretch and built the margin to 30-13 with 7:19 remaining until halftime.

Within the first four minutes of the second half, Vassar pulled ahead 53-32 after sophomore forward Hannah Senftleber made an inside layup off an assist from senior forward Krystin Tempora. The Golden Knights made a concerted run, however, outscoring Vassar 21-8 over the next ten minutes to come within 61-53 with 4:42 to play. During that run, Turner had five of her seven points. Key to Clarkson's spurt was sophomore guard Marissa Pelosi, who made all of her three 3-points in the second half.

After getting a late second half rest, Matsuoka returned to the court and connected on an immediate jumper with 2:15 remaining to put the Brewers ahead 63-53. After drawing within eight points, Clarkson was unable to mount any further offensive production.

Four Vassar players scored in double figures, led by Matsuoka's 24 points, 11 points from Senftleber, 12 from senior guard Brittany Parks – all of which came in the first half on an efficient 5-of-7 from the floor – and 10 from Tempora. Eight rebounds were earned by both Senftleber and O'Connell. Parks had six of Vassar's 17 assists.

Clarkson, which was held to 24 percent shooting from the field, got 12 points from Pelosi and freshman guard Raeanne Clabeaux. Senior forward Chrissy Scanlon had eight rebounds.
