SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –The Western New England women's basketball team ran its winning streak to six games with a 74-69 victory over Curry Wednesday evening (Feb. 8) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.


Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) fired-in a game high 24 points to lead the way. She also dished out seven assists and had five rebounds as the Golden Bears raised their record to 12-10 overall and 11-4 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

Also scoring in double figures were sophomore guard Ali Pessolano (Hampden, MA) who had 13 points and senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) who contributed 10. Proper and guard Alyssa Marsden (Wakefield, MA) were honored before the contest during "Senior Night" activities.

Western New England trailed 37-32 at halftime and fell behind by eight at 44-36  with 17:03 to play after freshman guard Lindsey Dionne (Portland, CT) (who didn't play in the first half) scored the Colonels first seven points of the second half.

The Golden Bears then went on a 21-3 run over the next six minutes, 10 seconds to take a 57-47 lead following a pair of free throws by Savino with 10:10 remaining.

WNE enjoyed its biggest margin at 70-56 following a basket by Savino with 2:06 left.

Curry made things interesting when junior guard Carolyn Houston (Melrose, NY) netted all eight of her points in a 40-second span to cut the gap to 74-69 with 31.1 seconds left, but no one scored after that.

Sophomore guard Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, MA) had 20 points for Curry while junior forward Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT) had 16 points and nine rebounds.

The Colonels are now 8-14 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

Curry had more field goals than Western New England (24-20), but shot just 35.8% from the field. The Golden Bears made 28-of-37 free throws (75.5%) compared to 12-of-17 for the Colonels.

Western New England had a 42-32 advantage in rebounds with sophomore guard Justin King (Ware, MA) pulling down a team best seven. Junior center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) chipped-in with nine points and six boards.
