LA CROSSE (February 8, 2012) - Time and again, UW-Stout kept coming back, but could not quite get there as the Blue Devils dropped a tight 65-61 decision at UW-La Crosse Wednesday.
In a game that was was tied seven times in the first half, La Crosse (15-7, 8-5 WIAC) carried a 38-34 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Blue Devils (6-16, 2-11 WIAC) continued to keep the game close throughout the majority of the second half until La Crosse took an 8, then a 10, then an 11 point, 59-48, lead with 3:41 remaining in the game.
But the Blue Devils began to come back. Brea Boomer (Fr, Grand Portage, Minn) recorded a pair of free throws, then landed a bucket to cut the lead to 59-52. Whitney Rawdon (Jr, Eau Claire) got Stout to with two points, 59-57, at 1:43 with a 3-pointer and a jumper. The Blue Devils were forced to foul, and the Eagles made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch.
Stout got the score to 62-59 on a layup by Bethany Reyzer (Fr, Altoona) with 14 seconds, then to 63-61 on a layup by Haley Froehlich (Fr, Mondovi) with a couple of ticks left on the clock.
Stout did not have an answer for Kassie Robinson, who scored 23 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Salata scored 14 points for the Eagles, while Katie Ehlen had 12 rebounds.
Rawdon and Boomer each scored 14 points to lead Stout, while Reyzer contributed 13 points.
Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m.
