The Bethany College women's basketball team suffered their second loss in six games as they fell to the hosting Waynesburg Yellow Jackets 74-56.
Bethany (13-9, 9-6 PAC), holding on to fourth place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), traveled to third place Waynesburg (17-5, 12-3) Wednesday night for their fourth game left of the regular season. The Bison, however, couldn't rise above the host, as the Yellow Jackets held the lead the entire game.
Numbers ran slow for both sides in the first half as each team shot just under 35% from the floor. Despite the 14-9 Yellow Jacket advantage with 9:10 left to go in the half, BC went on a 4-0 run to bring the lead within one, as senior guard Anne Wilson banked both of her free throws, followed by a Skylar Williams steal and a good lay-up by sophomore Taylor Verrico.
Waynesburg didn't let up as they increased their lead by nine to end the first half with a 33-24 advantage. The Yellow Jackets' defense came out with a sting in the second half as they totaled nine steals, led by guard Hannah Hunter with four, and gained 15 points off Bethany turnovers.
BC was unable to close the score and suffered the defeat, despite double-digit performances by three Bison. Junior guard Kayla Taormina had a team-high 14 points, as well as five boards. Senior forward Katelynn Hackathorn netted 11 with seven boards, while senior forward Renee Shepherd had continued success as she added on 10 points with a team-high nine rebounds.
With three games left in the regular season, the Bison must now travel to Thiel (6-16, 6-9). The Tomcats recently ended their four-game losing skid, as they defeated Geneva Wednesday night 72-42. Bethany and Thiel will meet Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
