ANNVILLE, Pa. — Tierney Hiltz led three Lebanon Valley players in double figures, and the 16th-ranked Flying Dutchmen gradually pulled away from the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team to take Wednesday night's Commonwealth Conference clash 65-51. Sophomore Kendra Beittel paced the Blue Jays with 14 points.
The Jays (14-7, 7-4 CC) got off to a roaring start behind Beittel's first of three 3-pointers in the game. All five players in E-town's starting lineup scored points in the opening 9:11 as the visitors built an 18-12 lead. Beittel had six of those points and Jayci Scannapieco four. In addition to Beittel, Stephanie Ellwood and Nadine Yunginger both connected on shots from beyond the arc.
Scannapieco's trey with 9:01 left in the first half extended the Blue Jay lead to 21-14, but LVC (20-2, 11-0 CC) netted 17 of the half's final 21 points to go ahead 31-25 at intermission. Caitlin Bach scored six of her eight first half points in the run. She was just one of the Flying Dutchmen to contribute to a 28-14 advantage on points in the paint for LVC.
Lebanon Valley, which shot nearly 50 percent for the game, made a living at the foul line where it hit 10-of-14 attempts in the second half. The Jays' proficiency from deep helped them stay close for much of the second half. E-town hit nine threes, with Scannapieco, Yunginger and Ellwood all knocking one down in the first eight minutes of the second half to pull Elizabethtown within 46-39.
Twelve straight points over the next 4:49 put the game firmly in control for LVC, however. Eight of those points came from the combination of Bach and Hiltz. Bach was one of four players in double figures with 11 points. Hiltz led all scorers with 18.
Not only was LVC's height an issue on points in the paint, but it also led to an 11-point edge in second chance points (16-5). The Flying Dutchmen outrebounded E-town 41-30, but actually lost the offensive rebounding battle 15-14. Six of Taylor Kreider's nine rebounds came on the offensive glass. Kreider added nine points, four assists and three streals to go with her nine boards.
Scannapieco scored 10 points to help Beittel carry the E-town offense on Wednesday. Hiltz and Bach got double figure outputs from teammates Kiely Chaklos (12) and Renee Fritz (10). Chaklos hit 8-of-10 free throws to account for most of her points.
E-town's playoff prospects remain bright, though the Jays did fall into fourth, a half-game behind Widener. The 7-3 Pride beat Arcadia 63-52 tonight. The Blue Jays did remain two games in front of Lycoming (5-6) which fell on the road to Messiah.
Another road test awaits the Jays Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. The game is scheduled to tip at 1 p.m.
