Conference Leading Occidental Tallies Victory

PASADENA, Calif. – The Occidental women's basketball team used a well rounded effort to record a 74-40 win over Caltech on Saturday evening.

Occidental (17-3, 9-1 SCIAC) scored the first eight points of the game during a four-plus minute spurt. However, the Beavers (0-20, 0-10 SCIAC) responded with a 5-0 scoring run to cut their deficit down to three points.

The Tigers held a single digit lead until a final scoring push before the halftime buzzer. Holding a 19-12 advantage with 8:13 left until intermission, the visitors scored 19 of the final 25 points of the stanza in taking a 38-18 lead into the locker room. During that final scoring stretch, Occidental scored on half of their last 20 possessions in taking the contest's momentum.

The SCIAC leading Tigers played an effective second in taking the win. Occidental never let the Beavers closer than 20 points while building their lead to as large as 37 points.

Occidental put 12 players in double figures led by Annika Awbrey's 15-point performance. Crystal Goodwin added a 13-point effort while Liz Little rounded out the double figure scorers with 11.

Teri Juarez and Rachel Hess each scored 13 points to pace the Beavers. Juarez grabbed seven rebounds to continue her league lead.

Caltech hosts Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.
