RALEIGH, N.C. -- Powered by a 14-1 run to start the second half, the Christopher Newport University Captains improved to 17-3 overall, 12-1 in the USA South, with an 80-56 victory over Meredith College (5-14, 3-10) today. Twelve different players scored for CNU, with four players in double figures as the team raced to its 12th straight victory. CNU improves to 11-0 all-time against the Avenging Angels.

Rookie center Camry Green scored 10 points and added a game-high 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year, while sophomore Tia Perry added a team-high 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting with eight rebounds.  Green dominated the glass and led the way as CNU outrebounded Meredith, 50-31, including 15 offensive rebounds. The Captains scored 18 second-chance points.

CNU held an 11-point lead at halftime, 46-35, but surged ahead by 24 points just eight minutes into the second behind the big run. The Captains scored 14 of the first 15 points out of the locker room, getting buckets from five different players. Rookie Katrina Marks scored the last field goal in the run, the first of her career-best 11 points on the day.

Meredith senior forward Megan Rahn, the second leading scorer in the nation, had 18 points in the first half as the Angels held close to the Captains for the first 11 minutes of action. A three-pointer from Kristen Alford put the Angels up, 19-18, with 9:51 to go in the half.

Christopher Newport scored the next 13 points in less than three minutes of action, though, to take a 31-19 lead. The Angels would pull with seven on a three-pointer from Rahn with 5:44 showing, but would get no closer as the Captains pulled ahead by double digits before the end of the half.

Rahn finished the game with 24 points and nine rebounds, right at her season average. Meredith finished the day shooting just 33.9% on 19-of-56 from the field.

Perry added four steals to go with her team-best 18 points, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Sophomore Nicole Mitchell added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting with five rebounds, while Marks and Green rounded out the double figure scoring with 11 and 10, respectively. Andrea Hobbs added five points and five assists off the bench.

The Captains are now set for a big conference battle tomorrow on Super Bowl Sunday. CNU will travel to face Ferrum College (16-4, 11-2), currently tied for second place in the USA South. Tip is set for 2:00 pm, as the front end of the conference doubleheader with the men.
