CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime's Bekah Campbell (Corinth, Maine) scored seven points over the last five minutes to fend off Green Mountain College, 61-52, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action Saturday afternoon. The Mariners (10-10, 7-6) led by as many as 21, but continued a streak of sloppy second halves, allowing the Eagles (2-17, 0-14) to get uncomfortably close down the stretch.
Green Mountain used a 13-3 run midway through the second period, with Chelsea Paul (Northville, N.Y.) getting the Eagles within eight, 49-41, on a three-pointer with 7:45 to play. Campbell scored the next seven points in the game to get it back to 15, 56-41, effectively ending the Eagles afternoon. Maine Maritime turned the ball over 18 times in the second half, with the bulk of the miscues coming during the Eagles' run.
Campbell finished the game with 13 points and five rebounds. She hit 5-of-9 shots on the afternoon and went 3-of-6 at the line. The first-year center's work off of the pine helped the Mariners to a 19-2 advantage in bench points.
The Eagles' Paul finished with a game-best 21 points on the strength of a 7-for-13 day that included a 4-of-5 effort from three-point range. Sierra Pease (West Rutland, Vt.) posted 18 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
The Mariners outworked Green Mountain 45-33 on the glass, with Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) securing 16 caroms, and Sam Goda (Eliot, Maine) collecting 10 more. She finished the game with her eighth double-double of the season, having posted a team-high 14 points.
Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday against New England College. The Eagles will take on Castleton next Saturday.
