MADISON, Wis. - For the second straight Edgewood College women's basketball home game, 40 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner. Unfortunately, the Eagles came out on the short end for the second time in a week, falling to Dominican University 63-62 in overtime during the annual Jam the Gym game at the Edgedome.
Edgewood College (7-12, 6-7 NAC) rallied from a 34-25 halftime deficit by holding the Stars scoreless for over six minutes to start the second half. Senior Sadie Ewing scored three baskets and junior Alison Tobin had two, for a 10-0 run to put the Eagles ahead for the first time since early in the game. After a basket by Dominican's Kayla Blom, two free throws by Jenna Coenen would put Edgewood College ahead, where they would stay until the final three minutes of regulation time.
After the Stars' Katie Budz hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 53 with 2:52 to go, Chelsey Watkins and Ewing both scored go-ahead baskets. However, each time the Stars answered and tied the game. With seven seconds to go, Tobin had the first chance at a regulation game winner, but her off balance attempt came up short. Ashley Oliver had Dominican's shot at a buzzer beater, but her three-pointer was off the mark.
In the extra period the Eagles got on the board first, when Ewing stuffed a shot by Dominican's Katie Budz, drove the length of the floor and dished to Dareon Henderson for a 59-57 lead. After Blom tied it, Ewing scored another layup for a 61-59 advantage. Then, tied at 61 with 29 seconds left Henderson made one of two free throws to put the Eagles up 62-61, but Blom answered again with seven seconds to play on a short jumper in the lane. The Eagles put the ball in Mariah Hill's hands for their final attempt, but Edgewood College was whistled for an illegal screen with 1.3 seconds left to wipe out their final shot.
Ewing posted a career high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the three-point line and three steals. Watkins added nine points, while Tobin finished with eight points. Henderson had seven points and a career-high eight rebounds. Melanie Walker led the team with six assists. The Eagles shot an even 40 percent for the game.
Dominican University (12-7, 8-4 NAC) was led by Blom with 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Laura Knieps and Ashley Oliver chipped in 10 points apiece, while Sarah Budz had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Eagles will have to sit and think about their near miss for an entire week as their next game isn't until February 4. Edgewood College will travel south to Aurora University for an afternoon game with the Spartans.
