NEWPORT, R.I. -- Senior Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) scored a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds, six blocks and four steals to lead the Salve Regina University women's basketball team to a 63-51 win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Saturday afternoon at Rodgers Recreation Center.

The Seahawks (11-7, 8-3 CCC), last season's conference champion, avenged a Dec. 3 loss to the Nor'easters in Biddeford. UNE (14-4, 9-2) retains possession of first place atop the CCC standings by virtue of Roger Williams University's victory over Endicott College earlier in the day.

Sophomore Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) battled foul trouble to finish with 11 points, eight boards and four blocked shots for Salve. First-year guard Laura Anne Dinan (Monterey, Mass.) scored eight points and collared 10 rebounds, while junior Kaitlyn Birrell (Scituate, Mass.) finished with nine points despite sitting a large portion of the second half after picking up her fourth foul early in the frame.

Senior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) paced the Nor'easters with 13 points, nine caroms and four steals. Rookie forward Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) pitched in with nine points and six rebounds off the bench, while junior Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) and sophomore Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) added eight points apiece.

With her team trailing 26-23 at the break, Shorey took over, scoring 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting the rest of the way. Shorey dropped in three consecutive buckets to key an 8-2 run early in the second frame, tying the contest at 36. After UNE came up empty on its next possession, the Seahawks would take the lead for good on a three-ball by sophomore Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.) with 11:52 on the clock.

Salve gradually stretched its lead, and held a 53-43 cushion after a Shorey free throw with 3:43 remaining.  UNE would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Seahawks took advantage of 14 blocked shots and 12 steals to give the Nor'easters troubles on their offensive end. Big Blue shot just 23 percent (14 of 61) from the floor and was wayward on 19 of its 25 three-point attempts.

Salve Regina shot 38 percent (19 of 50) on its field goal attempts and led in the rebounding column, 45-37.

Both teams return to action Tuesday. Salve hosts Western New England University at 6 p.m., while UNE heads to Curry College for a game with the same start time.
