WATERTOWN, Wis. – Fans who are interested in style points would be better served watching Dancing with the Stars. The Edgewood College women's basketball team knows it doesn't matter how you get it done, just find a way to get the win. The Eagles overcame an epic defensive struggle in the first half to pull away late in the game for a rough-and-tumble 42-32 victory over Maranatha Baptist on Thursday night.
Edgewood College (7-11, 6-6 NAC) and Maranatha Baptist were tied for the seventh time of the evening at 27-27 with a little more than eight minutes remaining when the Eagles offense finally began to click. Brittany Bylsma keyed a stunning 15-0 run by scoring two layups and three free throws to grab an insurmountable 42-27 lead. Sadie Ewing scored a pair of buckets in the spurt, while Alison Tobin and Chelsey Watkins added layups. The Eagles held the Crusaders scoreless for 7:42 until Autumn Peotter scored with 37 seconds left.
The first half was a struggle as both teams had trouble protecting the ball and making shots. Maranatha Baptist (9-7, 4-7 NAC) led 10-7 with under seven minutes to go in the half, before baskets by Bylsma and Watkins resulted in a 6-1 run to end the first half in favor of the Eagles 13-11. The two teams combined to shoot 8-for-50 (16 percent) and committed 28 turnovers.
Fortunately, the Eagles snapped out of it just in time as Bylsma finished with a season-high 11 points. Tobin added seven points and eight rebounds, while Watkins scored six points. Melanie Walker was the top rebounder for the Eagles with 10 boards to go with five points. Edgewood College did shoot a much improved 41.7 percent (10-for-24) in the second half. The Eagles also grabbed 14 steals to stymie the Crusaders.
Maranatha Baptist was led by Laci Peterson's double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Hallie Nelson added seven points, as the Crusaders shot just 20.4 percent and committed 27 turnovers under the Eagles' pressure.
Edgewood College will be back in action on Saturday when they host Dominican University in the annual Jam the Gym celebration at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Tipoff is 2:00 p.m.
