LANCASTER, Pa – Washington College turned a three point halftime deficit into a 63-54 road win against Franklin & Marshall with a huge second-half surge in Centennial Conference (CC) action Wednesday night at the Mayser Center. The Diplomats (8-3, 5-1 CC) fall for the first time in CC play and see their eight-game winning streak come to an end, while the Shorewomen improved to 7-4, 2-4 CC.
The Diplomats jumped out into an early lead, controlling most of the first half while only trailing twice. F&M took its largest lead of nine off an Alexa Barbush layup at the 8:04 mark to make it 23-14. The Shorewomen responded with a 13-6 run to close the first half, cutting the Diplomats lead to only three at the half.
F&M opened the second half with scores by Elizabeth Snyder and Megan Pauley to take a 33-26 advantage. However, the Shorewomen slowly chipped away at the Diplomat lead and eventually took the lead at 9:14 off a Sally O'Donnell three pointer to make the score 42-39. The Diplomats twice cut the Washington advantage to two, but the Shorewomen connected from both the floor and the free throw line in the closing minutes to ensure the road win.
Barbush led the Diplomats in scoring for the seventh game this season as she had a game-high 17 points. Synder also reached double digits with 10 points and four rebounds. Kristina McCarthy added nine points, nine rebounds and a season-high four blocks.
Washington was paced by Latisha Pledger with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Meghan Tait also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
F&M will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 7 at Swarthmore in CC play at 1 pm.
