GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The fourth-ranked Calvin women's basketball team rained down a school record 16 three-pointers in a 106-59 victory over Albion Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena. The Knights also established a Van Noord Arena record for most points in a women's basketball game.
Calvin (18-0 overall, 10-0 MIAA) connected on 10 first half three-pointers in taking a 50-26 halftime lead and then dropped in six more triples in the second half to roll to the win.
Calvin was 16 of 27 (.593) from three-point range as a team and had four players notch double-digits in scoring led by junior Carissa Verkaik with 20 points. Junior Kelsey Irwin had a career-high 15 points on 5-for-5 shooting from three-point range while junior Logan Marsh also had a career-high 15 points, connecting on three triples and all six of her free throw attempts. In addition, freshman Breanna Verkaik had a career-high 14 points to go with six rebounds. Eight different Calvin players connected on at least one three-point shot in the win. Senior Jill Thomas was 3-for-3 from three-point for the Knights and collected five assists.
Albion was led in scoring by Taylor Nugent who tallied 13 points while Madeline Winters had 10 points. Albion (12-6 overall, 7-3 MIAA) shot just 30.9 percent from the floor and saw its 11-game win streak snapped by Calvin.
Calvin now owns a two-game lead over Hope (8-2) in the MIAA standings and a three-game lead over Albion.
Calvin will host Trine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
