PASADENA, Calif. –  MIT built a big lead early in the game and never looked back in posting a 100-26 win over Caltech in a women's basketball match-up at the Braun Athletic Center.

The win lifts the Engineers record to 3-1 while Caltech falls to 0-2.

During the opening minutes of the first half, Caltech forced the Engineers into three turnovers in their first five possessions as the Beavers raced out to a 6-3 edge. However, MIT responded with a steady offense and solid defense. The Engineers proceeded to score 31 unanswered points in taking a 34-6 lead with 6:18 left in the half.

The visitors forced Caltech into 17 first half miscues which they turned into 29 points in building a 62-12 halftime lead. The Engineers went 26-for-44 (59.1 percent) from the floor during the first 20 minutes of action.

MIT carried that momentum into the second frame. They converted 17 of their 34 field goal attempts and recorded a plus-19 rebounding edge in the second half en route to their victory.

The Engineers inside presence was dominant all game. The visitors posted a 60-12 edge in points in the paint while using 27 offensive rebounds to tally a 31-2 edge in second chance points en route to their win.

Leading the Engineers offensive charge was Tamara Pena. The sophomore scored 19 points in 21 minutes on the strength of an 8-for-13 shooting performance. Pena connected on a game best three shots from behind the arc.

Alexxis Issac posted a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) while Anna Merrifield came off the bench to score 10 points to round out the double figure scorers for MIT.

Rachel Hess scored a team best 12 points for Caltech.
