WESTON, Mass. – Regis College defeated Mitchell College, 88-42, on Saturday night in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action.
The Pride extended their winning streak to seven games and improved to 12-3 on the season while staying a perfect 9-0 in the NECC. Mitchell dropped to 5-10 overall and 4-5 in league play with the setback. Emilee Marro and Alex Chace scored 14 points apiece to lead the Pride. Twelve of the 14 players to check into the game for Regis registered at least three points while the Pride had 26 assists on 37 field goals made.
Regis took a 6-2 lead before freshman Sheanna James picked off a pass and went coast-to-coast for the layup to make it a one possession game early on. Regis responded by stretching its lead out to nine points on a three-ball from Stefanie Wozmak. James continued to knock down shots in an attempt to keep the deficit in single digits, however, the Pride were too much as a fastbreak layup by Marro prompted a Mitchell timeout with the Mariners trailing 30-15 at the 7:06 mark in the opening period.
The break in action only spurred the Pride on as they finished the half on a 27-5 run to take a 57-20 lead into halftime. Marro led the Pride with 12 points in the opening frame while James netted 12 points as well to lead Mitchell.
The second half was all Pride as Regis led by as many as 51 points and ran away with its seventh-straight victory overall and ninth-straight win to open NECC play.
The Pride won the battle on the boards 54-21 while also winning the turnover battle, committing only 10 turnovers to the Mariners' 19. The Pride converted the Mitchell missteps into 30 points while also outscoring the Mariners 50-8 in the paint and running away with 21 fast break points.
Marro scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting while also adding five rebounds and three assists. Chace knocked down four triples en route to her 14 points, while Leah Murphy also chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Claire Ramonas and Sabree Rodriguez each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Stephanie Crawford had eight points to go along with five rebounds and a game-high six assists.
James led all scorers with 20 points while also adding five steals. Freshman Zilka Navarro joined her in double figures with 10 points and senior Bianca Young added four points and seven rebounds in defeat.
Mitchell will next host Wheelock College on Saturday, January 28 at 2 p.m.
