SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Senior guard Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) poured in 19 of her game-high 24 points in the first half, helping guide the University of New England to a 73-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) win over Western New England University in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Heathful Living Center.
With their sixth consecutive triumph over the Golden Bears, UNE is now 12-3 on the year and 7-1 in league games. WNE drops to 6-10 (5-4 CCC) with the loss.
Paradis was 10 of 17 from the floor and 4 of 8 from beyond the arc to pace the Nor'easters. She tallied her 24 points in just 23 minutes of playing time.With her first basket of the second half, Paradis passed Ruth Gagnon '84 (1,333 points) for sixth on the all-time scoring list.
Sophomore guard Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) contributed 14 points, while junior Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) added nine. Senior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) and first-year Kendra Dawless (West Greenwich, R.I.) each scored seven points. Russell and first-year Kelly Coleman (Portland, Conn.) grabbed six rebounds apiece.
Emily Savino had nine points for Western New England, and Justine King finished with eight.
After spotting the host Golden Bears the first four points of the contest, Paradis and Big Blue got rolling. The senior tri-captain tallied 10 points -- including a pair of treys -- over the ensuing eight minutes as UNE reeled off 18 consecutive points to establish an 18-4 lead with 10:25 left in the frame.
The Nor'easters, who led 40-20 at the break, would carry a double-digit lead the remainder of the afternoon, including a high-water-mark 37-point bulge in the late stages of the final frame.
For the contest, UNE shot 42.9 percent (9 of 21) from downtown and 87.5 percent (14 of 16) from the free throw line. The Nor'easters turned the ball over just nine times, compared to 22 miscues for WNE.
Big Blue will look to make it six straight wins Monday when Curry College comes to Biddeford for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Golden Bears return to action Wednesday when they host Gordon College at 5:30 p.m.
