Two of Centre's seniors had memorable evenings as the women's basketball team went ahead early and cruised to a 79-55 victory over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Southwestern on Friday in Danville, Ky.
Senior guard Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.) recorded a triple double with 14 points, 17 rebounds and 12 assists while fellow senior Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) led the Colonels in scoring with 16 and scored her 1,000th career point in the second half. By reaching the milestone, Huter becomes the 14th member of Centre's 1,000-point club.
The Colonels earned their 11th straight win by shooting 52 percent (31-of-60) from the field and a blistering 62 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range while holding Southwestern to 29 percent shooting (21-of-73) overall and just 19 percent (5-of-27) from outside.
After trading baskets early on, Centre took the lead for good when back-to-back 3-pointers by Jane Goatley (Springfield, Ky.) put the Colonels up 14-8 at the 12:38 mark in the first half. The Tigers remained competitive for most of the first half, but Centre began to pull away with an 11-1 run that made the score 35-22 with three minutes left in the first half.
The Colonels took a 40-27 lead to halftime, then gradually put the game away in the beginning of the second half. A 3-pointer by Prewitt go the lead to 20 points at 59-37 at the 12:26 mark, and Centre reached its biggest lead minutes later when Huter's 1,000th point pushed the margin to 26.
Prewitt and Huter were hardly the only Colonels to contribute to the victory as 16 players saw action, nine found the scoring column and five reached double figures. Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) followed the two seniors with 11 points while Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) and Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) each had 10. Southwestern's Chelsea Leeder led all scorers with 17 points.
Centre outrebounded Southwestern 46-38 on the game and also shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line to the Tigers' 8-of-13. Centre turned the ball over 23 times while Southwestern turned it over 15 times.
With the victory, Centre moves to 14-1 overall and stays perfect in the SCAC at 8-0. Southwestern falls to 8-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Centre is back on the court Saturday when it hosts Trinity at 6 p.m.
