Belton, TX— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team controlled the second half and the Cru rolled to a 70-55 victory over Texas Lutheran University Saturday afternoon in Belton. The win snaps UMHB's 11-game losing streak and moves the Cru to 2-13 overall and 1-10 in American Southwest Conference play. The Bulldogs fall to 3-12 overall and 2-8 in ASC play on the season with the loss.
The two teams traded the lead through the early going of the first half before the Cru closed the half with a 12-4 run to take a 33-25 halftime lead. TLU cut it to four early in the second half, but UMHB once again answered to take a 48-37 lead with 10:16 remaining. The Bulldogs closed to within six, but the Cru used an 8-0 run to retake control and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Brittany Zamora topped UMHB with 19 points and Carmen Maciel added 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Miranda Shorter also reached double figures with 11 points and Ashley Adams had nine rebounds. The Cru shot 37 percent from the field and hit 20-25 from the free-throw line.
Katy Scott topped TLU with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She was the only player in double figures for the Bulldogs. TLU shot 34 percent from the field, but went just 3-16 from three-point range. The Bulldogs out rebounded UMHB 45-37 but turned the ball over 22 times in the loss.
UMHB will hit the road for a pair of crucial ASC West games next week. The Cru will face Hardin-Simmons in a 5:30 PM start next Thursday before closing out the week with a 1:00 PM tip-off against McMurry on Saturday.
