With back-to-back games in front of them, the Eastern Mennonite women decided to take the stress out of the weekend and win the first game in easy fashion. The Royals scored the first six points Friday and never trailed in a 90-51 home win over Emory & Henry.
EMU held the Wasps without a field goal for the first 5:20 of the game and took a 6-0 lead. Alisa Brown (Dumfries, VA/Forest Park) and Stephanie Rheinheimer (Manheim, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) hit back-to-back three pointers to push the edge to 24-10.
The visitors regrouped and scored nine straight to get within five, but the Royals then closed the half on 13-3 streak to head into the locker room on top 37-22.
The second half was all EMU, as the women forced 14 turnovers and shot 46% from the floor. The result was a 53-point frame and the easy 39-point win.
The Royals played great "team ball," getting assists on 24 of their 31 made baskets. They also had 26 offensive boards with a 49-34 rebounding edge, and forced 26 turnovers to just 10 of their own.
Rheinheimer topped five EMU players in double figures, netting four triples and a game high 16 points. She also had five assists. Keyla Baltimore (Bristow, VA/Brentsville District) missed just one shot and came in with ten points, six assists and five rebounds.
Freshman Nora Osei (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) charted her first career double double with ten points and ten rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Brown had 11 points and Marla Young (Fishersville, VA/Wilson Memorial) charted ten.
Six women had two or more steals, as Eastern Mennonite had 16 as a team.
Michelle Williams and Carlyta Hamm co-led the Wasps with 11 apiece.
The Royals improve to 10-1 overall and 7-1 in the ODAC with the win. The women host conference-leading Guilford Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm. The Quakers won at Bridgewater on a last second shot Friday night, 63-62 in overtime.
