LaGrange upsets 18th-ranked Piedmont 78-76

LaGrange knocked 18th-ranked Piedmont from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 78-76 upset Wednesday night at Mariotti Gym. The Panthers improved to 5-0 in the GSAC and 9-4 overall, while the Lady Lions are 12-1 overall and 4-1 in the GSAC.

Junior Katie Covington led the Panthers with her third double-double of the season. Covington had a game-high 24 points and added 10 rebounds. She is now just eight points short of reaching 1,000 points in her career.

Freshman Madison McDonald followed Covington with 15 points off the bench. Kiah Britton tied Covington for team honors with 10 rebounds. The Panther bench outscored Piedmont's 34-10.

Sada Wheeler led Piedmont with a double-double of 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Keiondra Thompson had 15 points, Alyssa Jones 12 and Shanice Wheeler 10.

After leading by one at halftime, the Panthers used an 11-2 run to go up 66-58 with 8:38 left in the game. Britton started the Panthers' run with a jumper in the lane. Hunter Connell completed a three-point play for her only points of the game to cap the run.

Piedmont cut the lead to one four times the rest of the way, the last when Sada Wheeler finished a three-point play to make it 77-76 with six seconds left.

McDonald made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Panthers up 78-76 with four seconds left. The Panthers never let the Lady Lions get a shot off as Elizabeth Williams stole the ball from Thompson as time ran out.

In the first half, Piedmont took a 10-4 lead to start the game. The Panthers came back to take the lead and eventually led 38-28 after a layup by Britton with 5:16 left. The Lady Lions came back to take the lead, 43-42 with 45 seconds left.

Covington made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 43. Williams made the first of two free throws to give the Panthers a 44-43 lead at the half.

The Panthers play at Covenant on Saturday in a GSAC game.
