Dolphins’ Losing Streak Reaches Three With Loss To Old Westbury

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team dropped its third straight contest and fell to 3-9 in its last 12 home games with a 63-48 loss to visiting Old Westbury on Thursday night. Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was the lone Dolphin in double-figures with a team-high 13 points.

Mount Saint Vincent got off to a good start against the Panthers on Thursday and jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead after buckets from Brittany Griffin (Suffern, N.Y.) and Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) along with a three-pointer from Kluth in the opening two minutes.

The Dolphins would match their game-high lead at the 13:01 mark of the first half after a Griffin jumper, but would then allow a 25-2 Old Westbury run over a nine minute stretch. The Panthers would pull in front 33-15 following a pair of free-throws from Abigail Williams at the 4:09 mark and would carry a 33-19 advantage into the intermission.

Over the final 10 minutes of the half, the Mount would score only four points on its way to shooting 22.5-percent for the period. The Dolphins also struggled from behind the arc, going just 1-for-10 in the opening stanza.

Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent would string together a pair of runs to chip away at the deficit, but would be unable to get the disadvantage under 10 points. A Kluth bucket capped a quick 8-2 spurt with 10:04 left to play to cut the deficit to 48-37 and a pair of Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.) free-throws got the Old Westbury to lead to just 10 with 7:38 to play.

Following the Sinaly free-throws, the visiting Panthers quickly expanded their lead back to 18 points after an 8-0 run capped by a free-throw from Clarissa Gallagher with 4:42 showing on the clock. Gallagher would drop in two more free-throws in the final 46 seconds to secure the final 15 advantage for Old Westbury.

The Dolphins finished the game shooting 23.1-percent from the floor and have now shot under 30-percent for a game in four contests this season. The Mount went 3-for-17 from behind the arc and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Kluth finished the night 4-for-13 overall from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe on her way to double-figures for the sixth time this season. She also secured eight rebounds, swiped four steals and handed out five assists.

Senior Kara McNish (Hawthorne, N.Y.) led all players with 16 rebounds in the game and added five points and a blocked shot. Sinaly totaled eight points for the Dolphins and registered a career-high six assists.

Montague added four steals for the Mount, while sophomore Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) chipped in with six points and five rebounds.

Old Westbury finished up with three players in double-figures and was led by a game-high 18 points from Deslyn Applewhaite. She also led the Panthers with 10 rebounds to go along with a game-high five blocked shots.

Gallagher added 15 points on the strength of four three-pointers, while Denise Zajonc recorded 11 tallies to go along with four steals. Antoinette Jolly tied for the game-high with six assists on the night.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 3-7 overall on the season and to 0-3 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will head to league favorite Mount Saint Mary on Thursday night to tangle with the Knights. Tip-off in Newburgh is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
