NORTON, Mass. (Jan. 7, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College basketball team sustained a 55-42 setback to NEWMAC foe Wheaton College this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium. Senior guard Christine Chancy paced the Lyons with 10 points.

Mount Holyoke also received a boost from junior guard Angelica Pascual, who recorded nine points, four steals and three assists. First year forward Amber Legare posted eight points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, classmate Nicole DeMarchena added seven points off the bench. The Lyons shot 36.5% (19-52) from the field and turned 23 Wheaton turnovers into 17 points at the other end.

First year forward Abbie Brickley racked up 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists to set the tone for the hosts, who picked up their second win in three outings. Senior forward Gabbie DePalo amassed 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while first year guard Kenzie Kuhn dished out five assists to go with eight points and four steals. Wheaton knocked down 46.2% (24- 52) of its attempts from the floor and finished with a 36-28 edge on the glass. The hosts piled up 19 assists on 24 made baskets.

Wheaton (4-8, 2-4 NEWMAC) raced out to a 10-0 lead and took a 28-17 advantage into the locker room. Mount Holyoke sliced the deficit to 28-20 on a three-pointer by Pascual on its first possession of the second half. The Lyons trailed 33-24 after a layup by senior forward Tricia Chase at the 17:13 mark, but Wheaton responded with a 21-10 spurt to put things out of reach. A Kuhn jumper capped off the rally and put the hosts in front 54-34 with 4:46 remaining in regulation.

Mount Holyoke (2-10, 0-6 NEWMAC) is slated to resume its NEWMAC schedule at home against WPI on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
