Centre got a balanced scoring effort and stayed perfect in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 68-43 victory over Sewanee in women's basketball action Saturday in Sewanee, Tenn.
Five Colonels reached double figures and the bench outscored Sewanee's 31-13 as Centre opened an early lead and never looked back. Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) and Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) led all scorers with 14 points each while Jane Goatley (Springfield, Ky.) added 12. Maggie Prewitt (Mount Sterling, Ky.) and Hillary Moore (Hyden, Ky.) each chipped in 10.
Centre held Sewanee to just 24 percent shooting (15-of-63) from the field and 13 percent (4-of-30) from 3-point range while shooting 46 percent (26-of-56) overall and 42 percent (8-of-19) from outside.
The Colonels trailed just once in the game at 4-3 before Baechle scored six points in a 9-0 run that put Centre in front to stay. The closest Sewanee would get was when a Heather Baier free throw cut the margin to 26-23 with 3:09 left in the first half.
Centre took a 29-24 lead to halftime, then began to pull away when Baechle scored the team's first 10 points of the second half. Later, a Baechle jumper capped a 10-0 run that all but put the game out of reach at 49-28 with 10 minutes to play. The Colonels led by as many as 28 points after a jumper by Jenna Mire (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the closing minutes.
Centre held a 48-32 edge in rebounding, with Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) leading the way with 11. Prewitt followed with eight rebounds and led the team with five assists. Dana Middleton led Sewanee with 13 points on the afternoon.
Centre improves its record to 11-1 overall and stays perfect in league play at 5-0 while Sewanee falls to 7-3 with a 2-3 mark in the SCAC.
