LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eureka College senior forward Khassandrae Brown (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S./Kankakee) scored a game-high 18 points and sophomore guard Caty Eeten (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) compiled the game's only double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, helping Eureka to its most accurate shooting performance of the season in a 71-58 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Spalding, Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium in Louisville, Ky.

Eureka (8-2, 2-1 SLIAC) freshman Jenna Brooks (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) connected on a 3-pointer on the Red Devils' first possession of the evening, igniting a 9-0 EC burst to open the game.

While the Red Devils enjoyed success at the offensive end of the floor, it was the Eureka defense that pushed the Red Devils to a sizable first-half advantage.  The visitors held Spalding (5-5, 1-2 SLIAC) to just three field goals in the first 17 minutes and seven field goals for the half, building a 39-19 lead at halftime.  Eeten and junior guard Jay Stewart (Taylorville, Ill./Taylorville H.S./Illinois State) scored eight points apiece in the first half to pace a balanced offensive effort for EC.  The Red Devils shot 54 percent for the half and limited the hosts to just 23 percent from the field.

The Eureka lead ballooned to 25 points when Eeten's jumper pushed the Red Devils to a 57-32 advantage with 10:29 to play.  The Golden Eagles answered with their best stretch of the night, outscoring the Red Devils 26-12 over the next 9-minutes, 52-seconds, but the burst was far too little, far too late as Stewart's free throws in the final minute of the game allowed the Red Devils to earn the 13-point victory.

Stewart scored a career-high 14 points in 28 minutes off the bench.  The Red Devils shot 53 percent (25-for-47) as a team on Wednesday, besting their previous season-high of 51 percent in a home win over Knox on Nov. 17.  Senior forward Lisa Byard (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) grabbed a personal season-high nine rebounds.  Eureka crushed Spalding on the boards, 48-31, and scored 32 of its 71 points in the lane.

Wednesday's victory was the first for the Red Devils against Spalding in five tries since the two squads began playing as league rivals prior to the 2009-10 season.  The 13-point margin of victory is the largest in league play for Eureka since posting a 75-57 triumph over MacMurray on Jan. 15, 2011 and the biggest SLIAC road win since beating the same MacMurray squad on Jan. 16, 2008 in Jacksonville, Ill.

Kerstin Hayes scored 12 points to lead three starters in double-figures for Spalding.

The Red Devils will return home to the Reagan Center this Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off against defending league champion Westminster (8-2,3-0 SLIAC).
