Lady Choctaws Hand McMurry First Conference Loss, 51-50

CLINTON, MS - Sophomore point guard Sarah Workman hit a driving lay-up with :05 seconds remaining to give Mississippi College a 51-50 victory over McMurry University on Thursday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

The Lady Choctaws (6-5, 5-3 ASC) gave the War Hawks (8-3, 6-1 ASC) their first American Southwest Conference loss of the season, holding them to just 31% (20-65) shooting from the floor.

In the first half, MC jumped out to a 16-2 lead with 12 minutes remaining and held McMurry to just 23% shooting for the period.  The Lady Choctaws took a 27-19 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half, the War Hawks stormed back and took 32-31 lead with 14:09 to go.  The Lady Choctaws bounced back, holding a 45-39 advantage with 5:28 remaining.

The War Hawks would take a 50-49 lead with 1:00 remaining on a jump shot by M.J. Vickers.  After a pair of turnovers, MC inbounded the ball with :12 seconds left and Workman hit the game-winning shot.

Rikeita Thomas missed a desperation three-pointer as time expired, and the Lady Choctaws walked out with the victory.

Junior Elizabeth Brooks led the Lady Choctaws with 14 points on 4-7 shooting from the floor and 6-7 from the free throw line.  Junior Ebony Williams came off the bench to score 10 points.  Junior Kristin Newsome led the team with eight rebounds and chipped in nine points.

For McMurry, Keshia Collins led all scorers with 18 points, eight rebounds, and six steals.  Tory Salazar scored nine points for the War Hawks.

The Lady Choctaws will host Hardin-Simmons on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the "Golden Dome".
