Lairson Scores 13 Points as B-W Women Defeat Cross-Town Rival John Carroll, 55-52

BEREA, OHIO  – Sophomore guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) scored 13 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team beat cross-town rival John Carroll University, 55-52, tonight (Wednesday, January 4, 2012) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the OAC.  The Blue Streaks fell to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the OAC.


In addition to Lairson for B-W, sophomore forward Lexi Rohrbach (Tiffin / Columbian) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high-tying nine rebounds and junior All-OAC forward Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) added nine points, three rebounds, and two assists.  John Carroll was led by sophomore forward Missy Spahar with a game-high 20 points, a game-high-tying nine rebounds, and four steals and senior guard Emilee Ritchie contributed 12 points, five steals, and three assists.


The Blue Streaks opened the scoring, when senior guard Emily Day hit a three-pointer at the 18:04 mark. John Carroll added to its lead 5-0 when Spahar knocked down a jumper at 17:43.


B-W got on the board and cut the lead, 5-2, when junior forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) made a layup. The Yellow Jackets tied the game 5-5, when Lairson connected on a three-pointer at the 16:54 mark.


The Blue Streaks regained the lead, 7-5, when sophomore forward Hilary Liwosz made a jumper at 16:42.


B-W would tie the game again, 7-7 at 16:22 when Coulter made a layup assisted by junior point guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls). The Yellow Jackets took its first lead of the half, when Rohrbach hit a jumper with 13:53 left in the first half. B-W would go on 11-4 run when Carpenter made a jumper at the 10:12 mark to take a 18-9 lead.


John Carroll would use a 8-2 run of its own to cut the lead down to two points, 26-24 when Spahar made a layup with 16 seconds remaining until halftime.


The Yellow Jackets would get a layup by Carpenter with two seconds left in the first half to take a 28-24 lead at the intermission.


B-W opened the second half on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to ten points, 34-24 with 17:25 remaining to play.  The run was keyed by Lairson with four points.


The Blue Streaks would cut the B-W lead down to four, 36-32, as Lustig made a layup at the 12:55 mark.


The Yellow Jackets would gain their biggest lead of the game, 11 points, 49-38 when Carpenter tipped in a basket 9:05.


Undaunted, John Carroll would go on a 14-2 run and take the lead, 52-51 at the 2:10 mark when Spahar made one of two free throws.


B-W would regain the lead, 53-52 with 1:06 left in the game as Rohrbach was fouled and made two free throws. Rohrbach was fouled with 11 seconds remaining and made two clutch free throws to increase the B-W lead to three, 55-52.


The Blue Streaks attempted a three-point shot to tie the game by Ritchie but the shot came up short as time expired.


The Yellow Jackets are back in this Saturday, January 7 when they play host to the Crusaders of Capital University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.   The game will be carried LIVE via the Internet at
