MADISON, Wis. – Playing only their third home game of the season, the Edgewood College women's basketball team faced UW-Whitewater and went score-for-score with the Warhawks in the first half. There were three ties and six lead changes in the first frame before UW-Whitewater pulled away to gain an eight point advantage at the break. The Warhawk pressure was too much for the Eagles in the second half as they extended the lead to take the game 66-49.
UW-Whitewater (9-4) quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Melanie Walker and Alison Tobin nailed consecutive jumpers in the paint to pull the Eagles within one. Jenna Coenen then drilled a three-point basket to give the Eagles (4-7) a 7-5 lead with more than 17 minutes to play in the first half.
Cortney Kumerow put the Warhawks up 13-9 with just more than 10 minutes to play in the first half before Brittany Bylsma grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup to spark an Eagle run. Walker followed with a layup and Dareon Henderson capped the 6-0 spurt with jump shot. Sam Quandt ended the run with a three-point basket to put the Warhawks ahead. Chelsey Watkins gave the lead back to the Eagles with a pair of free throws with 3:59 left in the first half, but Katie Burton answered with a three-point basket on the other end to put UW-Whitewater ahead for good. The Warhawks closed the first half on a 9-0 run, taking a 27-19 lead at the break.
After scoring the last nine points of the first half, UW-Whitewater stayed hot, scoring the first nine points of the second half to take a commanding 36-19 lead with 18:03 remaining, forcing an Eagle timeout. Bylsma ended the run with a pair of free throws and Mariah Hill made the Eagles' first field goal since the 5:02 mark of the first half when she sank a three-point basket with 17:23 to go.
The Warhawk lead swelled to as many as 24 points at 52-28 with 11:05 left to play. The Eagles tried to get back into the contest at the free throw line, going 16-for-21 from the charity stripe in the second half. Hill cut the deficit to 16 with a free throw with 4:41 left and Watkins scored a jump shot with 1:40 remaining to make the score 61-46, but it wasn't enough as the Warhawks held on for the 66-49 victory.
Edgewood College ended the game 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) from the free throw line. However, the Eagles shot 34.1 percent from the field while UW-Whitewater made 54.2 percent of their shots. UW-Whitewater was led by Burton who scored 14 points while Kumerow and Jamie Swanson who scored 12 points apiece.
Watkins led the Eagles with 12 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Coenen followed with eight points while Walker chipped in with seven points. Tobin led the Eagles with six rebounds.
