CASTINE, Maine – Tufts University captured the Fifth Annual Mariner Classic, defeating host Maine Maritime Academy 47-39 Tuesday afternoon. Salve Regina won the consolation game 64-46 over Middlebury.

The Jumbos (9-2) converted 26 points off of the Mariners' (4-5) 32 turnovers to collect their ninth consecutive victory. All-tournament selection Caitlin McClure (Arlington, Va.) scored a game-high 14 points for Tufts, while tournament MVP Bre Dufault (Hampden, Mass.) scored six points and collected a pair of rebounds.

The game was tight throughout with both teams holding the lead twice. Tufts took over for good when Liz Moynihan (Storrs, Conn.) hit a jumper with 2:41 left in the first half. The Jumbos took a 25-21 lead into the locker room. The Mariners were still hanging around late, trailing 39-35 after Casey McCloskey (Howland, Maine) drained a trey. Dufault answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession followed by a McClure three-pointer to run it a nine-point differential, 44-35. The Mariners did not get closer than eight the rest of the way.

All-tournament selection Sam Goda (Eliot, Maine) scored 13 points to pace the Mariners offense and needs only five to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Leah Jackson (Dedham, Maine) recorded four points and five rebounds for MMA.

In the consolation game, Middlebury (3-6) struggled with the press at the outset, watching Salve Regina (4-5) open the game with a 23-3 run over the first eight minutes. Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) alone matched the Panthers' production in the first half as the Seahawks took a 35-17 lead into the locker room. Pendergast finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. Salve's Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) was selected to the All-Tournament team after scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out six assists and recording five steals. Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) recorded 19 points, nine rebounds and blocked four shots.

Middlebury got 13 points from Maddie Moreau (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to cap her all-tournament performance. Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, N.J.) offered 11 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks to the Panthers' cause.
