REDLANDS, Calif. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point first half deficit against the host school at the University of Redlands Winter Classic, but never managed to grab the lead. The Eagles came within one possession of taking the lead four separate times in the second half, but the Bulldogs held on for a 53-46 victory.
Senior Melanie Walker scored the first basket of the game for Edgewood College (3-6), but Redlands scored the next 16 points to put the Eagles in an early hole. Head coach Casey Thousand's squad began to turn the tide in the final three minutes of the first half. Trailing 26-12, the Eagles got two free throws from Allison Novitske, three more from Brittany Bylsma and a big three-point basket by Chelsey Watkins to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 28-20 by halftime.
Edgewood College continued to slice away at the Redlands defense scoring the first seven point of the second half. Freshman Mariah Hill hit both of her three-pointers to close out a 15-2 Eagles run and put Edgewood College within one point at 28-27.
The Eagles had their best chance to tie the game with less than three minutes to play. Hill scored a layup to cur Redlands' lead to 44-42. Edgewood College snapped on a full-court press which resulted in a steal for Walker. However, Walker's drive through traffic wouldn't fall. After a Bulldog basket from Mariah Barbetti-Cort, Alison Tobin scored in the paint to keep the Eagles within two points, but the Bulldogs closed the game on a 7-2 run for the victory.
Hill led the Eagles with 13 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Watkins was the only other Eagle in double figures, scoring a season-high 11 points. Bylsma had six points and her six rebounds shared the team-high with Walker. Walker also led the team with three assists. The Eagles shot 27.7 percent from the field, but stayed in the game by making 17 of 24 free throws.
The Bulldogs received a pair of double-doubles from their two leading scorers, Courtney Carroll and Barbetti-Cort. Carroll scored 17 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had a team-high four assists. Barbetti-Cort poured in 14 points and a matching 14 rebounds.
Edgewood College will face UC-Santa Cruz tomorrow in the second game of the Redlands Winter Classic. The Banana Slugs lost to UW-Platteville. The Eagles and Slugs will tip off at 5:00 p.m. central time.
