ALMA, Mich. – The Defiance College women's basketball dropped a non-conference road game to Alma College, 65-48, in the final contest before winter break. Sophomore Erica King paced Defiance with 13 points.
Cold shooting plagued the Lady Yellow Jackets in the first half, as the team struggled in the opening frame. Alma jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the 11:44 mark. The Scots led by as many as 16 points, 26-10, with 5:32 remaining in the first half. A 12-4 Defiance run over the last five and a half minutes took the two teams into halftime with the score 30-22 in favor of Alma. The late DC push featured four points from Kim Bingley and three points from King.
Defiance cut the deficit to five points, 30-25, on a three pointer by King to begin the scoring in the second half. A few possessions later, DC again brought the Scots to within five points, 32-27, on a Megan Zachrich layup, but it was as close as the Lady Yellow Jackets would get. An 8-0 run to push the score to 53-37 by Alma at the 11:23 mark effectively sealed the game.
DC out rebounded the Scots 42-37, and grabbed 20 boards on the offensive glass. The Purple and Gold forced 18 Alma turnovers.
King entered double-figures for the sixth time this season. Kim Comden reached double-figures for the eighth time this campaign with 10 points and two rebounds. Bingley ended the game with a season-best seven points. Megan Zachrich finished with five points and eight rebounds, while Brooke Zachrich chipped in eight boards.
Alma was led by Rachel Jaksa's 13 points and four assists.
With the loss, DC falls to 4-7 overall. Alma moves to 3-7.
The Lady Yellow Jackets will take a two-week hiatus for the holidays. They will return to action on Wednesday, January 4th against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Bluffton. Game-time is slated for 6:00 pm.
