CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Rockford scored the first points of the game, but Coe responded with a 22-1 run in the next 9:27, as they rolled to an 81-34 win over the Regents. In the win, Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) scored her 1,000th point.
Waskow entered the game needing just one point to join the elite 1,000 point club with just six other Kohawks. After missing her first two shots, Waskow connected on her final five field goal attempts of the game. During Coe's 22-1 run, she scored nine points, including six-straight at one point. In her sixth year as head coach, Randi Peterson has coached four of the seven players in Coe's 1,000 point club. With a game-high 13 points tonight, Waskow moved to sixth with 1,012 points.
The Kohawks led 22-3 with 9:34 to play in the first half when Gwen Scott hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 16. Coe used another big run after the three, as freshman Emma Ambrose (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) and senior Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 15-3 Kohawk run over the next 6:59. A layup by Britney Curry cut Coe's lead to 37-11 at the half.
Coe led 45-17 with 17:22 to play when they put together another big run. Waskow's final points of the game ignited a 13-0 run over the next 2:36, as Coe took a 56-17 lead with 14:46 to play. Another Scott 3-pointer made it 66-28 Kohawks with 8:30 to play before junior Lindsey Buckles (Davenport, Iowa/West) hit a 3-pointer, as the Kohawks ended the game on a 15-6 run in the final 7:35.
The Kohawks suited up 17 players for the game, with all of them playing at least five minutes. Spreading the scoring around, only two Kohawks scored in double figures, with 14 players scoring in all. Waskow was joined in double figures by sophomore Mackenzie Reed (Iowa City, Iowa/West) with 12 points. Freshman Megan Hayes (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and Buckles added seven points, tying a career high for Buckles. Britney Curry led the Regents with 13 points on 4-of-18 shooting.
Coe held a 47-30 advantage on the boards with Waskow finishing with eight. Freshman Kolbie Creger (Winterset, Iowa/Winterset) had a career-high six rebounds, while Buckles added five. Ware and sophomore Hannah Breitbach (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) had a game-high four assists, while Buckles and Reed added three apiece. It was a career-high for Breitbach, Buckles and Reed. The Kohawks had 16 steals, with freshman Lindsey Jipp (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) having a career-high three. Ware, junior Kalais Kuhlmann (Readlyn, Iowa/Wapsie Valley) and Creger added two apiece. It was a career-high for Jipp, Kuhlmann and Creger.
The Kohawks entered the game fourth in the nation in field goal percentage at 46.6 percent and shot exactly that in the game, connecting on 34-of-73 attempts. Coe won all the specialty stats, out scoring the Regents 38-18 in the paint, 29-4 off turnovers, 15-2 on second chance points and 46-6 on bench points.
Coe will have a break for the holidays before returning to action Dec. 30 against Mount Mercy. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Eby Fieldhouse against the Mustangs.
