MILWAUKEE -- The visiting Marian University Sabres shot 12-for-12 from the free-throw line in the closing minutes and came away with a 67-53 Northern Athletics Conference victory over the host Alverno College Inferno tonight in Reiman Gymnasium.

The Sabres (7-3, 4-3 NAC) shot just under 80 percent (19-for-24) from the foul line for the game, while the Inferno continued to struggle from the stripe with just an 11-for-24 (45.8%) performance, which included a number of front-end bonus misses.

Early in the second half, Alverno (3-7, 1-5) took a three-point lead on a Kristen Speerschneider (New Franken, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) 3-pointer, but the Sabres rattled off 11-straight points for a 42-34 lead with just under 13 minutes to play.

The Inferno would cut the lead to 50-47 on a three-point play by Jamie Hoernke (Mt. Horeb, Wis.), but the barrage of Sabres' free-throws would keep the visitors in front and would eventually extend the lead to the largest of the game, the final 14-point margin as the horn sounded.

Three Inferno players reached double figures tonight to lead the offense as Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) had a team-high 13 points of 5-of-8 shooting, while Speerschneider had 12 and Hannah Galstad (Holmen, Wis.) chipped in 10.

Marian's Alexis Becker (North Fond du Lac, Wis.) led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line.

The Inferno will conclude the nonconference portion of the schedule in a holiday tournament over the break. Alverno will take on California Institute of Technology and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the CMS-Caltech Classic on December 29 and 30. The games will take place on the Claremont McKenna College campus in Claremont, Calif.
